Grainfather Tips & Tricks #3 - Improving Efficiency
Improving Efficiency on Your Grainfather
Small tweaks that make a big difference
If you’ve ever missed your target gravity or feel like you’re not getting the most out of your grain bill you’re not alone. Efficiency is one of the most common frustrations in homebrewing.
The good news is that with a Grainfather system you’ve already got the right equipment — now it’s about fine-tuning your process.
What is efficiency in simple terms?
Efficiency is how much sugar you extract from your grain.
Higher efficiency = more sugar = higher gravity
Lower efficiency = wasted potential
Most Grainfather brewers sit around 70–80% efficiency once dialled in.
1. Get your grain crush right
This is the biggest factor and often overlooked.
What you want:
- Husks mostly intact
- Grain cracked open
- Minimal flour
Too coarse = poor extraction
Too fine = stuck mash and poor flow
If you’re buying pre-milled grain it’s worth checking consistency.
2. Stir properly at mash-in
Mash-in sets the tone for the entire brew.
- Add grain slowly while stirring
- Break up all clumps
- Make sure everything is fully wetted
Dry pockets mean lost efficiency straight away.
3. Let the mash do its job
Rushing the mash is a common mistake.
Best practice:
- Mash for at least 60 minutes
- Consider 70–75 minutes for bigger beers
- Allow recirculation to stabilise temperature
More time = better conversion
4. Control your recirculation
Your Grainfather pump is powerful — use it properly.
- Start slow and increase gradually
- Avoid compacting the grain bed
- Keep flow steady not aggressive
Good flow improves both clarity and extraction.
5. Sparge smarter not faster
This is where many brewers lose efficiency.
Key tips:
- Use water at ±75–78°C
- Pour gently and evenly
- Keep the grain bed covered
- Take your time
A slow steady sparge extracts more sugars.
6. Don’t skip the basics
These small details all add up:
- Check your mash temperature is accurate
- Use the correct water volumes
- Avoid cutting the boil short
- Calibrate your measurements (hydrometer or refractometer)
Brewcraft Tip
If your efficiency is inconsistent don’t change everything at once. Adjust one variable per brew and track your results. That’s how you dial in a system properly.
